Gone With the Wind is a phenomenal book. And amazing, excellently-plotted book, with distinctive, well-written characters.

And both of the "official" sequels SUCK.

They are both such outrageous offenses to the spirit of the original and of the characters that Mitchell wrote that I seriously can't believe they were approved and published.

Scarlett reads like self-insertion fanfic and contradicts buckets of GWtW.

Rhett Butler's People white-washes Rhett's character into a misunderstood noble goody two-shoes.

What the fuck, people. No.

I always thought that Ripley's Scarlett was 750 pages written to get Rhett and Scarlett back together. Although the idea of it being a fanfiction is quite right too-- I could totally see that!

It was all an excuse to a) have Scarlett be happy (with her Irish relatives, despite the fact that Scarlett in Gone always wanted to be a lady-- even though she failed), b) make Scarlett have another kid with Rhett and have her love it, despite her still having two kids who she ignores, and c) get her back together with Rhett.

...It was like a trainwreck.
