So, lacking anything else to do earlier this evening, I watched some of the later episodes of FMA (since I've only seen from about ep. 35+ once), and I realized something.
Kimbley drives something like 1/3 to 3/4 of the plot of the entire series. Maybe this is just something that never occurred to me before because I was much more focused on the other characters and actions when I finally say the whole show from alpha to omega, but...

I mean, seriously; check it out.

- Kimbley made Scar what he was during the Ishbaal War. He exploded part of the straggling groups Scar was a part of, 'sploded the X-shaped scar from which he later earned his moniker into his face, and 'sploded his arm off-- this latter action resulting in Scar-bro's "gift" of the right arm of DOOM and then bro's death. Because of all this, Scar when on a state alchemist killing spree-- I mean, yeah, there are lots of other reasons for that, such as the fact that it was state alchemists that did the most damage in Ishbaal prolly had something to do with that; however, he wasn't after the military as a whole(despite the fact that the alchemists were under military orders), just the alchemists, and I personally think he little encounter with Kim was scarring in more ways than two-- forcing the Mustang-tachi out of Central to the Eastern Headquarters-- after first sending Ed out there to "clean up" the area by dealing with Yoki and meeting Lyla (which ends up being pretty damned important)-- and allowing him to destroy Ninalexander, an action which leaves a lasting impression on Ed.

- His actions in the Ishbaal War land him in the Fifth Lab prison, where Kimbley gets rounded up by Envy to be used as an ingredient for the Philosopher's Stone, but Kim's got better plans and starts blowing his fellow captives up. This results in the floor caving in, and the "ingredients" spilling out onto the transmutation circle in front of Ed, who hadn't known they were in the room above him before this. If Kim wouldn't have done this, Ed probably would have carried through with the transmutation, believing that he was only using the Red Water and completely ignorant of the loss of life above him.
Kimbley somehow miraculously does not fall in front of Edward, and ends up getting picked up by Greed, who had been set free by Scar's fabulous arm of DOOM (see previous Kim-contribution note).

- Kimbley's cute little betrayal of Greed sets off a whole 'nother plot arc that results in the deaths of all of the chimera except Martel, Al and Martel bonding, and eventually Greed's death. Greed's return to Dante's house ends up with Ed thinking that Dante had been killed by Greed, and as he and Ed fight, he ends up revealing a lot of important information about the homunculi which Ed later needs and uses. I believe (but am not sure) that Greed is the first real death that Ed is single-handedly, directly, and non-accidentally responsible for.
Kimbely gets back into the military, thanks to the little war-monger Archer, and meanwhile, Martel swears vengeance against him for betraying the Greed-tachi; this boils down to her flinging herself out of Al to attack Kim and then Kim and Al getting into a fun and interesting little scrap where Kimbley swears that he's gonna blow Al up one way or another...
Also because of her vengeance-issue, Martel ends up stalking Kim through the ventilation system and finding out that the Fuhrer is a homunculus, and then she is killed for finding that out. Al-trauma.

- And then of course, there's the wonderful grand finale of his life, in which Kimbley has a joyful reunion with Scar in Lior, complete with parallel symbolism (the Red Stone, Kim doing something to the other of Scar's arms, etc...), before having his chest disassembled by the arm of DOOM which he is directly responsible for (see first note again). Hah, the irony. But Kimmy doesn't die easily, nono. He latches onto Al-- who has plead for the psychopath's life several times at this point, I might add-- and turns him into a slow detonation device before finally kicking it. Kimbley's last actions result in Scar hovering worriedly over Al just as Lust runs up and, taking in the situation, gives him the brilliant idea to turn the suit of armor housing Al's soul into something else and oh yeah! how about you finish that Philosopher's Stone? Scar combines the two ideas, passes on the arm of DOOM (parallel again), and then wanders off for a chat with Lust and some good old-fashioned bullet-dodging before he returns to haul Kimbley's corpse up the outside wall of Lior by his teeth since he's got no arms, and drop the alchemist's body over as a sign to the military. Of course Archer sees this as just the kind of resistance he was waiting for, and thus the militia fill the otherwise empty Lior and are turned into the Philosopher's Stone (aka: Al)... which trails off into the end of the series.

@_@
And here I had this impression that Kim was minor(ish) character. Dude, he like pwns half the fucking series; it's insane.

I think, just for that reason alone, Kimmy needs more love. *noddles*
Ok, that, and because he's the only man who can make a mullet cool. *dies laughing*

...**Coughcough** I like to believe episode 4 doesn't exist. >.> So he is Ed's first death.

OH yes

Crazed little fan that I am, I've been making those connections too. ♥ That was something I absolutely loved, that Kimbley was essentially the reason that Scar started hunting down State Alchemists. And yeah--Greed was the first time that Ed ever intentionally killed someone. (That's what makes it so sad; the only reason he did it was that he thought Greed would get back up again. ;_; )

A fun little note comes from the beginning of the series too. Do you remember the episode--I believe it's number eight--where Barry the Chopper was still human? When he's giving his little speech to Ed about why he kills he says, "It's like that State Alchemist I saw slaughtering people in a village--splat! Big fountains of blood!" I believe he was even talking about Ishbal at the time so, yeah, we all know who he's talking about. ^_~

Ed also mentions him later in episode fourty...eight, I believe. 47 or 48. It's an episode filled with Greed flashbacks too. As he's working his magic on Sloth he explains what he's doing and actually compares it to Kimbley's method of alchemy. Sort of like he was one-upping him. I found it amusing. ^^

And if you like GxK, which I know you do ^_~, it's also a fun note that they die in the same way. There's even that whole "bound in stone" aspect some where in the process. But more specifically, they're wounded in the same place (essentially in the same manner) and even give big final speeches during which they cough up lung tissue. It's really fabulously constructed when you sit down to study the episodes. ^^

And, oh yeah...

Yes--the mullet! I didn't notice at first. ^^ But yeah, I love him to bits but I refuse to cut my hair into a mullet for my cosplay later this summer. XD
