I gotta find a better way to do this.
Apr. 17th, 2013 07:02 pmSo, Jinya separated some of her gerbils because they were fighting.
We came home this evening to find that the cats had knocked over one of the cages.
Rascal, though declawed, got a hold of one, and in the space of a few seconds (with Jinya shrieking and lunging for him) managed to snap her spine. No, not immediately lethal...but lethal enough in the long run. She wouldn't have made it three days.
So I took her "out back".
*sigh*
Killing small animals should be easy, but with no bricks or large rocks with which to bash her head in, I was reduced to smashing her on the sidewalk. (In retrospect, I should have stomped her, or else found a sharp knife. Too late now.) It definitely wasn't as quick as I would have liked...but I think she didn't care one way or the other after the first two blows. Still, I was paranoid about leaving her alive and so smashed her to pieces. Literally. I could feel shards of her ribs floating in the pulverized mess of her body, and I was still vaguely uneasy that she might be alive.
There's still another one loose, and with the disgusting mess that this house is, we can't find the damn thing. We tried locking the cats up and looking, but honestly the cats are the only way we can hope to find her.
If I'm very lucky, I won't have to kill another gerbil tonight.

Date: 2013-04-19 12:28 am (UTC)Naw, I found her a few hours after posting this and Jinya caught her. It's good now...but I will keep that live-trap idea for the future. That's a good plan.

Date: 2013-04-19 12:46 am (UTC)I think I understand? Like it's a test of something fundamental, similar to finding out how you'd react to an extreme situation (war, bombing, riot, prison, hostage situation, zombie apocalypse)?
