All I want.

ALL I WANT.

Is a working computer.

That's all.

That's it.

I tried installing Word on this bitch, and it went down. Viruses! I can't get my main drive to stay up, despite running an antivirus AND doing a system restore. It keep BSoDing me.

I can get a new internal drive for about $70, but I sure as hell can't afford a legal copy of Windows. And I'm going to lose everything at this rate-- my old assignments, my stories, my resume, everything.

Today SUCKS.

I had to switch over to Ubuntu when my computer got dropped and killed a few years ago. Honestly, even after I got another machine with Windows on it, I never looked back... Ubuntu takes a couple weeks of getting used to, but it's very user friendly (especially for Linux) and versatile. I honestly like its versions of Word (openoffice) and Photoshop (GIMP) better than the real ones at this stage, so it might be worth looking in to.

You can actually run the OS off a DVD for a few days while you get aquainted/transfer your other files off onto an external drive, if you need to. Hell, you can run it entirely off of an external drive with no need for an internal one, if you have to, though it gets a little weird.

Just a suggestion.

I've never used Linux before at all, and so I'm a little leery of throwing myself whole-heartedly into something new...especially since I know how much I hate the standard Mac interface, for example, which discombobulates me.

Still, I'll look into it! I'm always open to suggestions, and godDAMN if I'm not sick of fucking Windows and its problems!

I was wary of Linux too, and have always hated macs (I can deal with the newest ones, but god...), so when my programmer-man was all "oh, here, let's put you on LINUX!" I was all "OH SHIT."

But Ubuntu really IS good, and as I said, you can have the trial period of running it off a disk for a while before you actually install it to get used to it. I've been running it for over two years now and at times I get weirded out by certain features not being present in my windows XD

You should check it out, but certainly, keep your other options open too. *nodnod*

Well, I have some friends who don't have Windows but do have Ubuntu, so it looks like that's what I am getting.

You said there's a Photoshop-type program for Ubuntu? And a word processor?

Do you know anything about iTunes and Ubuntu?

There are indeed, and honestly both of them work on Windows computers as well. I colored the big picture on my journal using GIMP.

iTunes... :/ There is no Ubuntu version HOWEVER I can steer you to music programs that ARE compatible with iPods to transfer your music to them (or whatever other player you have), and I know there's a couple of programs floating around for buying songs off iTunes as well, though I've not used them myself.

Sweet. Okay.

Thank you for all of your help! You're a lifesaver! I wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't find a way to get Windows; I'm not familiar enough with Linux to have thought of that on my own. Thank you so much.
