Read and Review, s'il vous plait.

Looky, looky! I wrote something!
Y'all should read it and correct my hyper-snarky-bitchiness and innate crankiness and make it more acceptable to actually send to these poor bastards in Washington. Or suggest more stuff to add to it.
I am writing in regards to a number of hot topics in the news in hopes that my voice will be heard. Democracy is the rule of the people, and I am doing my civic duty by asking you to acknowledge some of my concerns.
First, I do not support President Bush's conflict in Iraq, nor the "War on Terrorism." I am ashamed that my country is engaging in this level of hostility without a proven threat; America has engaged in far more terrorist actions against other countries than others have engaged against us. 9-11 was a fluke-- a terrible event, but highly unusual. America has only suffered two major strikes on its soil since the country was formed: Pearl Harbor and September 11th. It may be another fifty years or more before another such strike. I refuse to live in the state of fear that the government and the media have induced into the American public in order to keep us docile and unquestioning.
I am strongly against the so-called Patriot Act; said act has nothing to do with being patriotic and everything to do with stealing basic liberties and rights guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights away from the American people.
The mistreatment of the Iraqi POW and the deaths of Iraqi civilians are in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, as signed and ratified by the Senate and President of the United States of America in 1932. I am more offended, ashamed, and horrified than I can express... I feel that a letter of grievances against the United States by Iraq (or Afghanistan) to the United Nations, Amnesty International, and the Commission for Human Rights is justified and should be written. We have acted against international agreements of warfare, and this law-breaking should not be unheeded.
Secondly, I write to speak about minimum wage and the soaring gasoline prices. Federal minimum wage has needed to be raised considerable (by a dollar or more) for years; it is simply not enough money to live on in most places. With gas prices rising to well past two dollars a gallon, a five dollar minimum wage is ridiculous; depending on how far one's commute to work is, it is possible to spend more money getting to work per week than one can earn working! There is something serious wrong with this! Please, America's people need a higher minimum wage!
Third, and finally. I am strongly against an amendment banning gay marriage. I feel that the discussions about this issue have devolved into silly, childish prattle. There is no harm in letting two people get married, if that is what they wish- no matter what gender, race, class, or nationality the pair happen to be. There are, in fact, many benefits with gay marriage; a quick look at the sociological data from the Netherlands would show that to anyone who bothered to look.
Thank you for your time, and thank you for representing my views in politics,
Jessica Smoll

Date: 2004-05-19 07:16 am (UTC)It's not bad. You might want to include some specific examples -- for instance, do a little math with the minimum wage thing; these politicians aren't too bright. ^_~ Print it out for me, and I'll come up with more feedback. *looks woefully up to the front of the Stats class* I think they actually expect me to pay attention. xD
