Having studied many languages as well, I can tell you - STUDY! It grieves me how much fluency I have lost over the years. I can still easily read and understand everything except Russian (which has deserted me almost entirely) but my conversational skills are dead. As a former military linguist, I hate that I let my skills wither away.
Of the languages I've studied, I thought French, Spanish and Korean were the easiest. Go figure.
